Kauaʻi police begin using license plate reader cameras

The Kauaʻi Police Department is introducing automated license plate reader cameras, which record the plates and images of vehicles passing set locations. Police say they will use them to find stolen vehicles, missing people and vehicles tied to investigations.

The department said the cameras don’t stream live video, and that the data is kept within KPD, unlike private Flock Safety cameras, whose data is available to subscribers. Chief Rudy Tai said the department is committed to balancing public safety with privacy.

What to watch: KPD has not said where the cameras are or how long data will be kept, two questions privacy advocates often raise about these systems.
