Maui Council advances ethics bill; lobbyist rules move forward
The Maui County Council voted unanimously Friday to advance Bill 55, which would give the Board of Ethics six years instead of one to pursue ethics violations. Members dropped a provision that would have made it retroactive. Final reading is Nov. 13, Maui Now reported.
Separately, the council’s Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee voted 9-0 Tuesday to recommend Bill 100, which would require paid lobbyists to register with the county and report their spending. Board of Ethics Executive Director Lauren Akitake told the committee that Maui County is the only jurisdiction in Hawaiʻi without comprehensive lobbyist rules.
What to watch: The lobbyist bill still needs two votes of the full council and the mayor’s signature.
