What it costs to live in Hawaiʻi: grocery prices, utilities, rent and everyday expenses, with the latest state and federal price data.
Local eggs in Honolulu now top $10 a dozen
The price of a dozen locally produced eggs in Honolulu rose more than 10% over the past year, from $9.04 to more than $10, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity. Eggs shipped from the mainland rose only slightly, from $7.78 to $7.87 a dozen.
Local organic eggs rose more than 17%, from $11.26 to $13.19 a dozen, while imported organic eggs jumped nearly 25%, from $8.29 to $10.26. Prices for 18-count cartons fell for both local and imported eggs. The data covers April through June.
Board of Agriculture Chair Sharon Hurd urged shoppers to keep buying local to support island farms.
What it means: Larger 18-count cartons were the one place prices went down this year, so they may be the better buy per egg.
