Honolulu named a World War II Heritage City

The National Park Service has designated the City and County of Honolulu an American World War II Heritage City, recognizing its role in the war and its work preserving that history.

The designation honors civilians as well as service members, from residents who rescued the wounded and gave blood after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor to the shipyard workers who repaired the carrier USS Yorktown in 72 hours in 1942, in time for the Battle of Midway.

What it means: The title can help draw attention and support to Oʻahu’s World War II sites, from Pearl Harbor to lesser-known places like Ewa Field.
