Police dog finds missing hiker in the park

A Hawaiʻi Police Department tracking dog named Trina found a missing 70-year-old Oʻahu man on a trail in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on Oct. 19, about two miles from his rental car, police said. He had not been seen for more than 24 hours.

He was carried back to the trailhead and taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for dehydration and exposure. It was the second time in two months Trina has found a missing person.

What to do: Tell someone your route before hiking in the park, carry plenty of water, and plan for cold, wet weather at Volcano’s elevation.
