Kīhei overflow repaired; Pāpaʻikou discharge and Puakō bacteria advisory

Maui: Repairs to Kīhei Wastewater Pump Station No. 6 were finished early Friday after a mechanical failure caused an overflow Thursday. Wastewater reached parts of Kalama Park and the Kīhei Fire Station but not the ocean, the county said. The Kalama Park advisory and the request to conserve water have been lifted.

Hawaiʻi Island: About 117,000 gallons of fully treated wastewater with possibly elevated chlorine were released offshore of Pāpaʻikou on Oct. 20 and 21 after the plant’s de-chlorination system failed, Hawaiʻi County said. Separately, the state Department of Health posted a high bacteria advisory at the Puakō boat ramp after routine testing found enterococci above the safe level.

What to do: Stay out of the water at Puakō boat ramp until the advisory is lifted. Current advisories are posted on the Department of Health’s Clean Water Branch website.
